Massey University’s new Ahumairangi Studios in Wellington NZ, joins the commercial world to the academic with a focus on premium analogue signal chains. Alongside their Neve 1073’s, Studer A800 24 track and mic locker to match they have now acquired 6 Austrian Audio OC818 microphones from NZ supplier Jansen. Mike Gibson their lead engineer comments:

“These are my new desert Island mics, Initially I ordered them for use on drums (they can take a hit!), but have further ended up tracking Choirs, Woodwind, solo voice and everything in between with them. Their overall tonal voicing is excellent for general use,  with a smooth off axis response and ability to track dynamics that has impressed. The pattern steering via the separate diaphragm capture has been the icing on the cake allowing large groups to be rebalanced to the room ambience easily at the mix stage. This is a studio that hires to the industry half its time and carry’s out academic research for the other half, the OC818’s have become a compelling item for both.”
